Tips, Tricks and Traps of the Tribunal: A masterclass on how you can be a master at the SAT

This sundowner will provide a deep dive into approaching all stages of the State Administrative Tribunal.

Our presenters and seasoned professionals of the SAT, Alex McGlue from Lavan, Craig Slarke from McLeods and, Joe Algeri from Altus Planning, will share their valuable insight, advice and experience. This includes how you can best approach each step in the SAT process, how to mediate like a pro, do’s and don’ts, learn about what the other party might be thinking, all the way through to preparing for, and attending a final hearing.

Included in this seminar will be live mock performances of mediations and hearings as well Q&A, so please come with your burning questions!

This event is designed for all planners and other professionals involved in SAT processes, irrespective of your experience, and whether you are working as an applicant, respondent or other interested parties.

Whether you are well seasoned with SAT processes or yet to experience the world of appeals, we are sure you will take something away from this interactive session.

Registration commences at 3pm with the session commencing at 3.30pm sharp. Please then join us for networking including drinks and canapes from 5.30pm - 7.00pm.

See you there! ??️

OUR PRESENTERS:

  • Joe Algeri is a cattle farmer and harmonica player that just happens to have a planning degree. As will be evident in the workshop, Joe has also long held ambitions for the stage and screen.  In his spare time, Joe is the Director of Altus Planning, a niche consultancy where one of the speciality services is representation, expert evidence and mediation at the SAT. Joe has been involved in almost as many individual SAT cases as Craig Slarke, he stopped counting after 300. Over the last 20 years, Joe has appeared for almost every local government in the metro area and many others in the regions. Joe believes the key to being successful at the SAT is integrity and preparation.
  • Alex McGlue is a special counsel in Lavan’s Planning & Environment team with over 12 years of practice experience, acting for both private sector and governmental clients. His areas of expertise include town planning and environmental matters, land compensation, administrative law, enforcement matters and property due diligence. Alex has been recognised in leading legal guides and directories including Doyle’s Guide and Best Lawyers in Australia.
  • Craig Slarke joined McLeods as an articled clerk in 1992 and has been a partner of the firm since 2000. Craig practises primarily in litigation, particularly in planning reviews in the State Administrative Tribunal, and in the Supreme Court jurisdiction. Since the inception of the SAT in 2005, Craig has appeared as Counsel for local government respondents in over 170 decided cases, and in countless others which have settled prior to a final hearing.  In planning related matters, Craig would almost certainly appear in the State Administrative Tribunal more than any legal practitioner. Craig would like to make it clear that he is not a West Coast Eagles supporter.
